Why does it feel hard to breathe?

In cold-water immersion studies, hyperventilation has also been associated with reduced blood flow velocity in the brain. How to make a cold shower less overwhelming

  2. Cool your arms and legs first. Let your breathing settle before moving the water toward your torso, neck, or face.

  3. Keep your face out of the stream initially. Sudden facial cooling can add another strong reflex response.

  4. Do not deliberately hyperventilate or hold your breath. Breathe normally and step away from the water if you cannot regain control.

  5. Keep the first exposure brief. Longer and colder are not automatically better.

Repeated, controlled exposure can reduce parts of the cold-shock response in some studies, but habituation does not remove the risks of cold-water swimming or plunging. Full-body immersion should be treated as a separate activity with greater hazards. Do not swim in cold water alone.

When should you stop?
