  • 79.3% of readings during graded exercise were within two breaths per minute of the clinical reference.

  • The reported bias at rest and during controlled breathing was −0.24 breaths per minute.


These results concern respiratory-rate measurement. They do not establish that Alveos diagnoses nervous system dysregulation, anxiety, burnout, trauma or a sleep disorder.

The study was funded by Alveos, involved a sample of healthy adults in a supervised session and has not yet been peer reviewed. Respiratory rate is the validated measurement; other breathing characteristics and interpretations require further validation. Free-living and clinical-population research are still needed. In a 20-person validation study, most Alveos respiratory-rate readings were within two breaths per minute of clinical reference equipment. The study is a company-funded preprint and has not yet been peer reviewed.

Why breathing is relevant to nervous system regulation

Breathing and autonomic activity influence one another. Stress and exertion can change breathing, while voluntarily changing the pace and pattern of breathing can affect cardiorespiratory and autonomic measures.

A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that breathwork was associated with a small-to-medium reduction in self-reported stress compared with control conditions. The researchers also urged caution because many included studies had a moderate risk of bias. A separate review of 58 clinical studies found that 54 of 72 evaluated breathing interventions significantly reduced stress or anxiety, although results varied and the review did not establish that every technique works for every person. This supports a careful conclusion: guided breathing can be a useful wellness and self-regulation practice. It does not support saying that an app “heals” the nervous system or instantly “resets” the vagus nerve. Breathing both responds to changes in state and provides one voluntary way to influence physiological arousal.
